The following is from Jennifer Hunter the Sr. Lab Manager with the City of Durham.

The supervisory position in my lab has gone live on the City website (see below). The job title is Sr. Environmental Planning & Compliance Analyst, but it is effectively a

lab supervisor. If anyone in your pretreatment network is interested in applying, please forward this.

The position reports directly to me, and will supervise 6 analytical positions after onboarding and successful completion of the 6-month probationary period. The incumbent will be a working supervisor, in that they will be performing analyses daily in addition to their supervisory/personnel tasks. I myself ran BOD’s over this icy weekend, and you go out in the field when needed, so this should not be unexpected. It sounds like a lot in the job description but it is a manageable workload in practice.

The schedule is generally M-F, 8-5 with occasional weekends. The incumbent will be the person in responsible charge of the lab in my absence. Since my lab is not part of a treatment plant, the incumbent will not be expected to do any plant-related work like take field readings, nor does my staff collect any samples in our current organizational structure. We only receive and perform lab analyses. Our lab runs drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater samples, but I do not expect applicants to have expertise in all of those areas.

Thanks again, and I hope you all weathered the weekend safely!

Hi, I just renewed a SIU permit. A few of the categorical limits changed due to the recalculation of production based limits and only those have both daily max limit and monthly average limits. All other local permit limits have only daily max, not monthly average. The # used in the AT is the daily max limit for most parameters, as that is the only limit, but when there is a monthly average as well, which do you use in the AT instead? The way the last permit was set up, the AT used the monthly average permit limit when available. The daily max is much higher than the monthly average so it makes a big difference in the AT so I want to make sure I use the correct #. Thanks!

Does anyone have experience with a closed landfill? We have one that appears to be drying up. Their last DMR reported an average flow of 3 gallons per day, and they have intermittently reported no discharge. However, it appears they sometimes send a few thousand gallons, just not when they are set up to sample, apparently. We've had trouble collecting our sample too. They told me this is to be eventually expected, as the water comes from gas extraction condensate, and less gas should be extracted as the landfill ages. I suspect there could be other factors. I am thinking about how to handle this from a practical stand point; they are a non-SIU. Has anyone had this experience? Will things ever get so stable and dry that the permit should be closed? Anyone willing to chat with me about it?
