Does anyone take septage hauler waste? If you do are the haulers allowed to dump at your plant? We currently take waste and it's supposed to be domestic only but we only have the haulers saying it's not industrial or some hazardous waste. Just wondering what everyone's opinion is. I know that if you receive it onsite then you can potentially be a Hazardous Waste Storage Facility. Trying to get the city to get it from being dumped directly into the plant. Any ideas or comments will be appreciated. Thanks, Eric Jones

septage hauler waste
Hi Eric, Clinton was taking septage for about 3 years. We strictly did not allow anything but septic tanks unless permission was given for something else (case by case). We have since stopped accepting it (about a month ago) due to issues with introducing it into our headworks. We don't have a septage receiving station (other than directly into our influent wet well), so our headworks would get slugged every time a hauler dumped. It was messing up our influent sampling as well and overloading our primary clarifiers. If you are accepting waste from septic haulers, I would require them to do at least one round of testing on what's in their truck, sign a certification statement that it's only domestic waste, and I wouldn't take it if you don't have a receiving station or something similar that has a way to gradually introduce it into your headworks. I definitely don't recommend accepting port o potty waste without a trial. The chemicals in those can wipe out your bugs very quickly. We had to have an operator attend every truck because of some haulers trying to skirt the rules. Between that and the other issues I mentioned, it just didn't work for us.
Hi Eric, we accept septage at our largest plant, both from domestic septic tanks and portable toilets. We have a septage receiving station that introduces it at the head of the plant. It seems to contain rags and the resultant housekeeping issue is probably the biggest problem we have with septage haulers on a recurrent basis. Ops and Maintenance work to keep the area cleaned up and functional, our admin handles the billing, while Industrial Pretreatment issues the authorizations to discharge (we recently moved from authorizations to permits), measures trucks during the application process, issues rfid stickers for billing, corresponds with the haulers, and issues any Notices of Violation or suspensions at the direction of our plant Superintendent. I think because of the size of our plant, we don't seem to see many issues with the toxicity of the blue stuff. We haven't had any problems, that I know of, with people dumping anything on us besides septage.
